I start by understanding the requirement or issue, then work through the evidence and options with the team. The approach depends on the problem and the constraints of the existing system.
Clarify the requirement, expected behaviour, and constraints with the people involved before choosing an implementation.
For production issues, establish what is known about the reported behaviour and try to reproduce the conditions behind it.
Use the available logs, data, and code to test explanations and follow the issue across system boundaries.
Discuss options and trade-offs with the team, then choose a change that fits the existing system and delivery needs.
Review the implementation, work with QA to check affected flows, and follow up on issues found during delivery or production support.
